The Family Field Guide Series is designed for two purposes:
1. To add meaning and understanding to observations during outdoor nature explorations.
2. To act as a resource for teachers and students in the classroom, and during outdoor studies of science and language skills practice.
As a teacher, I consider the Family Field Guide Series books one tool among many to help facilitate student engagement in learning about nature science content, language skills, and as a reference aid to help students learn about learning. To this end, the Journal Writing Activities and Student Activity Pages on this site encourage kids to utilize non-fiction reading strategies, to find information, to make connections that might otherwise go unnoticed, and to have a bit of fun along the way.
Language Arts Teachers: These Journal Writing Activities promote the practice of metaphors, similes, rhyming patterns, syllable patterns, sentence structuring, vocabulary, and parts of speech. The Activity Pages promote research strategies, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and parts of speech.
Science Teachers: The Student Activity Pages are organized by themes based on the Common Core Curriculum Standards for 1st-4th grades including Adaptations, Habitat, Mountain Ecosystems, Life Cycles and Food Chains, while using specific plant and animal groups as examples to make these themes relevant.
